July 1, 2009 "Music from Latin America"
<Listen To Preview>
This week's edition of Classical Guitar Alive! celebrates the musical contributions from Latin America- the Spanish
and Portuguese- speaking countries of the Americas, with their unique musical forms, dances and rhythms. Special
thanks to Simon M. , a listener in Manchester, England, for suggesting the theme of this week's program.
The program begins with an early recording by Jorge Morel (b. 1931) of Agustin Barrios's(1885-1944) "Choro do Saudade."
This sets the tone for the program- an Argentine guitarist performing a work by a Paraguayan composer, who wrote this
piece in a Brazilian style.
The latest 2007 CD release by the Santa Fe Guitar Quartet features music of eight-time Grammy- winning Cuban musician
Paquito D'Rivera( b. 1948)'s "Tres Danzas Latinoamericas" are jazz-influenced works written in the form of nationalistic
dance forms: Wapango (Mexico), Danzon (Cuba), Vals Venezolano (Venezuela).
The "Concierto Antillano" by Puerto Rican composer Ernesto Cordero (b. 1946) looks to music of the Antilles for its source,
and is based on Cuban and Puerto Rican forms and rhythms.
The Grammy-winning Los Angeles Guitar Quartet performs Cuban composer Eduardo Martin's "Hasta Alicia Baila"
(Until Alicia Dances), which uses the overlapping cross-rhythms of the Cuban rumba.
Argentine guitarist composer Jose Luis Merlin (b. 1952) also draws influence from his homeland. His "Progresiones para
Pauline" is dedicated to the memory of Pauline Lasse, who worked for the Council on Human Rights in Latin America in
Eugene, Oregon. Merlin's "Galope el Jinete" (The Rider Galops) is based on a poem of Nicandro Pereyra, and is
representative of the influence of Argentina's horse culture.
The program concludes with Venezuelan composer Antonio Lauro's (1917-1986) "Nelly" arranged for guitar and the
Latin American instrument, the cuatro, performed by John Williams and Alfonso Montes.
