February 21, 2007 "Rising Stars 2007/Xuefei Yang Interview"
<Listen Online Now>
This week's program features music by some rising stars, and an interview with the young
Chinese virtuoso Xuefei Yang. The program begins with a two guitar arrangement of the first
movement of Mozart's piano sonata in D, K284, by Canada's HK Duo: Drew Henderson and Michael Kolk.
Formed in 1996, the celebrated Iowa-based chamber music group Red Cedar Trio is Jan Boland,
flute, David Miller, viola, and John Dowdall, guitar. In 1893, Antonin Dvorak composed
his "American" String Quartet in F major during a Summer spent in Spillville, Iowa. In 2004,
Red Cedar's flutist Jan Boland commissioned 15 Iowa composers to write a one-minute variation
on a theme from scherzo movement of Dvorak's "American" String Quartet in F. Led by
composer-in-residence Jerry Owen, the other composers heard in the work are:
Jan Boland, Jonathan Chenette, Peter Hamlin, Robert Lindsey Nassif, Michael Gilbertson,
Lyle Dockendorff, Tracey Rush, Lucas Gullickson, Michael Daugherty, Donald Chamberlain,
Peter Bloesch, Dan Knight, Harvey Sollberger, and Pat Smith.
In an interview recorded in February of 2007, the young Chinese virtuoso Xuefei Yang
discusses the popular guitar arrangement of Isaac AlbenizŐs "Asturias", and the challenges of
concert programming.
The program concludes with Richard Rodney Smoot's "SOHO: Orpheus in the Underworld" for guitar,
orchestra and singing bowl, featuring guitarist Christopher Teves and the Moravian Philharmonic
Orchestra, conducted by Vit Micka.
