February 27, 2013 "Arauco Premiere, Richard Stover Interview"
<Listen to Preview>

Tony MorrisChristopher ParkeningEduardo FernandezMark Anthony Cruz

This week’s edition of CLASSICAL GUITAR ALIVE! features the world premiere recording of a large-scale (36 minutes long!) work for guitar ensemble, "Arauco" by Chilean composer Javier Farias, and a 2010 interview with Richard Stover, author of the Agustin Barrios Mangore biography "Six Silver Moonbeams."

The program begins with Germany's Duo Sonare performing Giuliani's two guitar arrangement of the Overture to Mozart's opera "La Clemenza di Tito."

The programmatic work "Arauco" by Javier Farias is based on a 16th Century epic poem about the Spanish conquest of Chile and the fierce resistance by the Mapiche Indians there. The piece is written for guitar ensemble with two double basses, and a flamenco guitar soloist (depicting the Spanish Conquistadores), and a classical guitar soloist. The performance is by the Quebec-based ensemble Forestare.

The program continues with a 2010 interview recorded at the historic Hotel del Lago in San Bernardino, Paraguay, with Richard Stover, author of the Agustin Barrios Mangore biography "Six Silver Moonbeams." He discusses his four decades of research into the life of Agustin Barrios Mangore, and meeting the dedicatee of Barrios Mangore's piece "Julia Florida," and her tragic death. Norbert Kraft's recording of Julia Florida follows.
