October 20, 2010 "Women Composers & Performers/Ana Vidovic Interview"
<MP3 Promo>

Renata Green Viva Trio Jennifer Bourianoff

This week's edition of Classical Guitar Alive! features works by women musicians, both composers and performers, and an interview with Ana Vidovic.

The program begins with an interview taped in January 2006 with Ana Vidovic, who discusses the difficulty of growing up in Croatia during a time of war in the mid 1990s. Her recording at age 15 from that time features a solo guitar arrangement of Bach's Flute Partita in a minor, BWV 1013.

Isabella Leonarda (1620 -- 1704) was primarily a composer of sacred vocal works, however the 12 sonatas of her opus 16 comprise the earliest (1693) published sonatas by a woman composer. In performance taped in March 2006, Viva Trio (Renata Green, flute; Jennifer Bourianoff, violin; Tony Morris, guitar) performs two movements from her Sonata Prima, op. 16.

The program continues with one of the most compelling guitar concertos to emerge in the last 25 years, the "Tre Canzoni da Suonare per Chitarra ed Orchestra d'archi" by Czech composer Sylvie Bodorova (b. 1954) is performed by Lubomir Brabec with the Prague Chamber Philharmonic Orchestra, conducted by Jiri Belohlavek.

"Valsas do Rio" is a work for two guitars by the young Brazilian composer Clarice Assad (b. 1978). Her main instrument is the piano, but is well-acquainted with the guitar, as her father is guitarist-composer Sergio Assad (b. 1952).

Paraguayan guitarist Berta Rojas performs "Cielo Abierto", or "Open Sky", by Argentine guitarist-composer Quique Sinesi

Comprised of three of Britain's finest young guitarists, the Apassionata Trio (Hayley Savage, Amanda Cook, Rebecca Baulch) performs Gary Ryan's "Cabaret (Showgirls)."
