March 4, 2009 "09-10 Classical Guitar Alive"
<Listen to Preview>
This week’s edition of CLASSICAL GUITAR ALIVE! features new music from Mexico, Uruguay, and the United States, plus a classic of the Spanish guitar repertory.
The program begins with a guitar transcription of Isaac Albeniz’s (1860-1909) piano piece “Rumores de la Caleta.” Contemporary Mexican composer Eduardo Angulo (b. 1954) wrote his Guitar Quintet op. 21 “The Birds” as a musical homage to his country’s many species of birds. American guitarist-composer Frank Wallace was inspired to write his “Nuevas Cantigas” by the anonymous Medieval Spanish songs “Cantigas de Santa Maria.” Uruguayan composer Leo Masliah wrote his concerto for guitar and strings in 2004. This world premiere recording was made in Montevideo, Uruguay in 2008 featuring guitarist Eduardo Fernandez.
