February 25, 2009 "New Cd's Cruz Interview "
<Listen to Preview>

Tony MorrisMark Anthony CruzOleg and MotherIspaniada

This week’s program features some new cds and a 2009 interview with composer-guitarist Mark Anthony Cruz.

The program begins with music by Spanish vihuelist Esteban Daza (c.1537-1591?) performed by New Hampshire-based vihuelist/guitarist Frank Wallace.

In an interview recorded February 2009, guitarist-composer Mark Anthony Cruz relates how he was inspired to write the first movement of his Triptych No. 2 after hearing a performance by award-winning young guitarist Thales Smith.

The program continues with the Guitar Concerto subtitled “The Secret Wedding” by composer Marian Budos. He writes about the work:

“It was written in 1997, as a wedding present to my wife, Ivana. It was called 'Secret Wedding', because indeed, it was a secret wedding; we eloped to the Vatican, in order to avoid the awkwardness of special expenses and invitations, where her family are almost all in Australia, and mine entirely in the Slovak Republic. It was a beautiful, neutral ground on which to say our vows in the most simple ceremony imaginable.

Each of the movements represents different stages of our relationship, the first being the meeting and initial friendship (Rubato. Largo), the second - falling in love and leading to the marriage proposal (Larghetto. Andante), and the third... the actual wedding (Presto). Hence the mood of the individual movements.

It was recorded by the Slovak chamber orchestra of Zilina, conducted by Oliver Dohnanyi, with Jan Labant as soloist. It was premiered/ recorded on the 23rd May 2002. I know of another performance at Lublin in Poland, for which it was originally commissioned, but postponed on account of serious floods that damaged the opera house in which it was to be performed. The music from the concerto has also been borrowed on several occasions by local film makers.”

The program concludes with two works from the latest cd by Russian guitarist Oleg Timofeyev, titled “Ispaniada”, which features Spanish music written by Russian composers.

Special thanks to Armin Teimouri for the Marian Budos recording.
