May 27, 2008 "Music for Two"
<Listen To Preview><Listen Online Now>

Dispelling the notion that the classical guitar is mainly a solo instrument, this week's edition of Classical Guitar Alive! features music for two- guitar duos, a guitar and fortepiano duet, and a duet for guitar and cello.

The program begins with a guitar duet arrangement of harpsichord piece by Jean-Philipe Rameau (1683-1764), "Le Tambourin", performed by Germany's Albeniz Duo which is Burkhard Wolk and Reiner Stutz.

In addition to his solo guitar work, virtuoso guitarist performer-composer Ferdinando Carulli (1770-1841) wrote a great deal of guitar chamber music, including his opera-influenced Grand Duo in D major, op. 70. Guitarist Sonja Prunnbauer performs with fortepianist Robert Hill in this recording on the Musik Dabringhaus und Grim label.

Composed and dedicated in 1968 to the Romero family of guitarists, virtuoso brothers Angel and Pepe Romero perform Joaquin Rodrigo's (1901-1999) "Concierto Madrigal" for guitar duo and orchestra with the Academy of St. Martin in-the-fields, conducted by Neville Marriner.

The concludes with the Sonata for cello and guitar by Brazilian pianist, conductor, radio broadcaster, composer Radames Gnattali (1906-1988), performed by Odair Assad and Edmond Carlier.
