September 25, 2007 "Revisions"
<Listen To Preview>

This week's edition of Classical Guitar Alive! features musical revisions: works by one composer than have been changed, adapted, completed, or revised by another composer.

The program begins with "Song of the Emperor" of Luys de Narvaez (1538). This vihuela adaptation of Josquin Des Pres's (1450-1521) "Mille Regretz" was supposedly a favorite song of emperor Charles V (1500-1558).

All that survive of the four known lute concerti of Silvius Leopold Weiss (1687-1750) are the solo lute parts. Lutenist Richard Stone, using only musical material taken from these surviving lute parts, has recreated stunningly authentic-sounding orchestral parts from this material to recreate how these concerti probably sounded. He is heard with his group Tempesta di Mare.

A mainstay of the student repertoire, the etudes of Fernando Sor (1778-1839) are well-known to beginning guitarists. French-Tunisian guitarist-composer Roland Dyens (b. 1955) adapted several of these for guitar and string quartet.

Peter Warlock's ( 1894-1930) "Capriol Suite" for string orchestra was based on dances from the "Orchesographie" (1589) by Thoinot Arbeau. In the 1990's, film orchestrator Patrick Russ adapted a version of "Capriol Suite" for guitar and strings.

The program ends with Leo Brouwer's (b. 1939) arrangement of the Beatles song "Eleanor Rigby" by Lennon/McCartney.
