January 1, 2007 "3 Performer-Composers/Michael Nicolella Interview"

This week's program features works by three performer-composers, and an interview with guitarist-composer Michael Nicolella, who discusses his approach to composition.

During the time of Baroque lutenist Silvius Leopold Weiss (1687-1750), composition, improvisation, and performance were integrated in musical training and life. Weiss active in Dresden as a court musician and was also a prolific composer for the instrument.

In an interview recorded in November 2005, Seattle-based guitarist composer Michael Nicolella discusses the advantages of composing for guitar away from the instrument. He performs as soloist in his Guitar Concerto with the NorthWest Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Anthony Spain.

The program concludes with Ivan Rijos' arrangement of the Puerto Rican hymn tune, "En Esta Reunion, Cristo Esta."
