November 26, 2007 "Zupfmusic/Reiner Stutz interview" <Listen Online Now>

This week's edition of Classical Guitar Alive! features music for "zupforchester", or "plucked-string orchestra", performed by one of the featuring one of the world's finest, the Saarlandisches Zupforchester from Germany.

This edition features 2 interview excerpts with its conductor of the last 10 years, Reiner Stutz. Stutz relates the little-known history of the zupforchester, from its humble beginnings as a "poor man's orchestra", to its current status in Germany and Europe as a sophisticated ensemble known for its unique, brilliant sound.

The program begins with music of the Nepolitan Baroque, Barbella's Trio in G. In the first interview excerpt with conductor Reiner Stutz, he describes the instrumentation of a zupforchester (mandolins, guitars, mandolas, bass, harpsichord).

The program continues with more music of the Italian baroque, the "Concerto al Unisono", op.2, #8 by D'all'Abaco.

The interview with Reiner Stutz continues as he relates some of the 30-year history of the Saarlandisches Zupforchester, followed by the Zupforchester's performance of his arrangement of Purcell's "Midsummer Night's Dream".

Two original works for zupforchester are heard, Kurt Schwaen's "Abendmusik", and Wolki's "Interplay". The program ends with the "Capriccio" of Hans Gal.
